Spier Wine Estate breaks the record for the most double gold medals at the Veritas Wine Awards

What a historic night.

Spier Wine Farm received nine Double Gold medals and seven Gold medals at the 29th annual Veritas Wine Awards gala dinner in Cape Town. Spier’s golden results is the most ever awarded to a wine producer since the prestigious competition began in 1991.  Seven of Spier’s nine Double Gold winners were white wines and two were red.

We are absolutely delighted with these results as they recognise our team’s passionate commitment to crafting quality wines. The success of our white wines in particular – across varietals and, indeed, vintages – shows a depth, versatility and consistency that we’ve worked really hard to achieve. –  says Spier Cellar Master Frans Smit.

This year Veritas’s authoritative jury, including five distinguished international and 95 local specialists, judged close to 1500 entries during a five-day blind tasting session.

The Veritas victory comes soon after Spier Ideology Sauvignon Blanc 2019 was included in the prestigious FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10.

We are thrilled that a Sauvignon Blanc from this year’s vintage is already receiving acclaim. In spite of prolonged drought having made growing conditions difficult in recent years, the vineyards we pick grapes from have shown that, if carefully tended, they can continue to produce grapes of excellent quality and complex character. This is evident even when the wine has been recently released. – says Spier Cellar Frans Smit.
