Seelan – a restaurant and bar that truly reflects both Seelan’s own unique personality and the wealth of experience and ideas that he has amassed over more than two decades at the forefront of the industry.

A taste of St. Tropez in the Cape

Seelan – who has launched and been instrumental in the successes of some of the Cape’s most illustrious establishments, including La Perla, The Grand, The Reserve Brasserie and Shimmy Beach Club – conceived Seelan as a taste of St Tropez at the V&A Waterfront – a home away from home for Capetonians and tourists alike.

This sociable atmosphere is greatly enhanced by the innovative, glass-enclosed kitchen, which invites guests to be more than just diners but, rather, audiences immersed in an experience composed of exceptional service, casually sophisticated décor and the matchless cuisine of a true master.

Our menu is an exploration of the common elements between the cuisines of various cultures, and the fresh, wholesome earthiness of this food really appeals to me. I like to use as many fresh herbs as possible but simplicity is key and I select my ingredients with great care to let the flavour combinations speak for themselves. – Seelan.

The restaurant’s stylishly simple outside patio overlooks the bustle of the Waterfront’s harbour, with a full view of the iconic Table Mountain, while the soft grey-and-white colour scheme extends through elegant arches into the restaurant’s warmly lit interior, with charming wicker chairs, wooden accents and vases filled with beach sand, pebbles and seashells that hint at Seelan’s ocean-front locale.

Seelan V&A Watefront

The exoticism of Kerala in Southern India, the rustic elegance of the Mediterranean, nuances of the Middle East and the down-home freshness of Cape cooking reflect the eclecticism of Seelan’s personality and the colourful diversity of Seelan’s Cape Town home.

All of this is presented to guests within the pages of Seelan’s beautifully illustrated, blue and beige menu as they are served by highly professional, smartly attired waiters, many of whom have come to Seelan from other establishments, where they worked under Sundoo, and all of whom have at least four years’ experience as servers.

With all of these first-class features to its credit, the Seelan Restaurant & Bar experience on Quay 5 at the V&A Waterfront holds all the promise of a reputation as stellar as that of its renowned creator.
