Mix a Monkey Shoulder ‘Blazing Monkey’ for National Scotch Day

Celebrated annually on the 27th of July, Monkey Shoulder has crafted the Blazing Monkey Cocktail to commemorate National Scotch Day. It’s a day when Monkey Shoulder wants to recognise the craft that goes into the creation of aged whisky distilled from malted barley.

In appreciating whisky-making heritage, they would like to acknowledge the distillery workers who used to shovel tonnes of malting barley hour after hour for long shifts. Painstaking work that often led to workers’ arms hanging down, a bit like a chimpanzee’s, a temporary affliction termed ‘monkey shoulder’. The condition no longer exists, but Monkey Shoulder Scotch Whisky honours tradition by being one of the few distilleries in Scotland that still floor malt.

Recently voted the number 1 trending whisky amongst the top 100 most influential bars in the world for 2018, Monkey Shoulder is the Scotch liquid you should be sipping on this National Scotch Day.


The Blazing Monkey contains the warming nature of a whisky punch set ablaze with rich aromatic spices of nutmeg and Angostura bitters, with accents of sweet banana and tart dark chocolate.

What You’ll Need

  • 40ml Monkey Shoulder whisky
  • 12.5ml Mozart Black
  • 10ml banana liqueur
  • 10ml boiling water
  • 5ml Demerara sugar syrup
  • Dash Angostura aromatic bitters
  • Sprinkle of nutmeg spice

Making It

Carefully warm ingredients in a bain marie, blaze and serve in a handled glass. Garnish with an orange twist to garnish. Best done as the first drink of the night.
