Catalina Semillon and Vinography Range launch at Benguela Cove

The Benguela Cove Catalina Semillon was greeted with much fanfare at estate launch, as was the new artisan range, Vinography.

Said awarded winemaker and cellar master, Johann Fourie: “What makes Benguela Cove an exciting wine estate to work with, is its great diversity of soil and slopes and the variety of cultivars planted here. An added bonus is the close proximity to the ocean that ensures a cooling effect with welcoming breezes to keep the vineyards healthy and disease free.” He led them on a tutored wine tasting, followed by a wine cellar treasure hunt that allowed them to enjoy a miniature lighthouse exhibition in the cellar, replicas created by lighthouse expert, Jan Smith.

What you can expect from Vinography:

Sauvignon Blanc 2017 – aromas of papaya, lemon, pineapple and a hint of fynbos; a chalky palate, with plenty of fruit weight and racy acidity. Cellar door price: R350.

Chardonnay 2017 – nutty ginger and cinnamon aromas; white peace, crème brulee, lemon verbena and orange zest; balanced and intense without being overt and a hint of saltiness. Cellar door price: R350.

Petit Verdot 2017 – montage of red and dark fruit, flowery lavender, roses and Turkish delight; a savoury taste of capsicum and black pepper. Cellar door price: R450.

Catalina Semillon 2017 – So named after the flying boat that operated under the Royal Air Force in WWII, the Catalina, the flagship white wine that captures the Benguela Cove philosophy is one created to improve with age. It boasts complex aromas of sweet pea, lime, lemongrass, quince, orange blossom, white lily and fynbos. It lingers on the palate with oyster shell minerality and integrated acidity.

Guest feedback:

“What a day. The Catalina stole the show”- Charlie Birt.

“10 out of 10. Brilliantly run event and wines were on point showing a true identity. That Semillon is gonna be the best time capsule ever. What a wine!” Dane Raath, Raath Promotions.
