Gourmet Boerie Review

These days you can find a restaurant that will pretty much sell you gourmet anything. Sometimes it works. Other times, well, it’s a big, over the top flop. I was worried when I was invited to Gourmet Boerie. The restaurant is trendy and really well designed. And they always seem to have fun things happening on the interwebs. So I was just worried the food may have been a let down.

But guess what? It wasn’t.

You can choose which flavour boerie to have with each meal: traditional, ostrich, lamb, beef, veg. Pretty cool. You can also choose between sweet potato or normal skinny chips, salad or onion rings. And you choose what type of roll you want: white, wholewheat or rye!

The Boerie Salad // R59

Cos lettuce, pan fried boerie, crispy bacon, anchovies, parmesan shavings, garlic croutons and egg with a homemade boerie dressing. Their take on a Ceasar’s Salad, we had it without the bacon so I could get involved, with chicken boerie. I’m not sure why it was called a boerie dressing, as it didn’t taste any different to a Ceasar dressing. It was nice. But at the end of the day, if you’re going to Gourmet Boerie, have a damn boerie.

7 Boerie Sliders // R74.90

Sadly for me, these ‘lil guys only come in traditional, and contain pork. So I didn’t taste them personally, although I ordered two to try with other boerie. The 7 include:

Old Skool Boerie – plain with caramalised onion. Simple, delicious, to the point.

The Hangover – bacon, caramelised pineapple and avo with cheese sauce. This looked really delicious. The bacon, cheese and avo combo is a classic one. Three words were uttered after Marvin tasted this “f*** that’s delicious”.

Chakalaka Boerie – topped with the traditional South African tomato-based salsa, apparently it was very nice, if a little simple. Great in conjunction with other more interesting options.

Tomato Madness – topped with a homemade sweet and spicy relish, which complemented the smoky boerie beautifully.

The Gorgonzola – This looked magical. Creamy gorgonzola sauce, was paired with earthy, nutty crunch from caramelised pecans and the delicious sweetness of the pear.

The next two sliders, I tried as full versions with the pork-free boerie…

Pure Sophistication // R64.90

Beef boerie with sweet caramelised onion, sour goats’ cheese, roast cherry tomatoes, basil pesto and rocket – the perfect combination of flavours and textures. It was classy, but in an understated way. Each taste did it’s job and wasn’t overpowered by the rest.

The Mexicano // R56.90

This is the new love of my life. Messy. Over the top. Perfect. Just how a boerie should be. Lamb boerie, topped with fresh tomato salsa and fiery jalapeños, were cooled by sour cream and guacamole. Coriander and crisp cos lettuce finished it off perfectly. Have I mentioned how perfect it was? Perfect.

Dessert Platter // R35.90

They call this a mini-dessert platter. I don’t know who decided that it was mini. Comfortably enough for two to share, it is one of the most affordable desserts I have ever come across. Warm, sticky homemade malva pudding, milk tart infused with almond extract, and a light apple crumble, served with vanilla bean ice cream – if you’re a desserty kinda guy or gal, you could go just for this bad boy.

A stunning venue, plenty events and specials, friendly staff and damn delicious food. They also offer free WIFI, plenty plug points for your laptop, a handy cellphone charging station.

Gourmet Boerie is a breath of fresh boerie flavoured air, which put a big smile on my face.

PS: Get involved with buy 1 get 1 free boerie all day Monday; and between 4pm and 6pm Monday to Friday. (Gourmet Boerie reserves the right to withdraw these specials without notice)
