For the love of “Food, Booze & Tattoos”

Described as a Renaissance man and a modern-day Jack-of-All-Trades, Brett Rogers is the host of the South African counter-culture, travelogue and food show Food, Booze & Tattoos, which is broadcast on SABC3 Thursday nights at 21h00. The show, which has already been aired to great audience acclaim in countries such as Sweden, Italy and Poland, showcases South Africa’s unique and diverse contemporary cultures and demonstrates that, as a tourist destination, it’s more than just a beautiful game reserve.

Brett Rogers discovers the best of all three worlds as host of the SABC3 show

The thirteen part series recounts the epic road trip that Rogers took across South Africa to track down the most mouth-watering food establishments, coolest micro-distilleries and the edgiest tattoo parlours. His search for the best food, booze, and tattoo establishments inadvertently uncovered that the three are more than not inherently connected.

What we focussed on was food lovingly prepared, with care and with ethical concern for the sourcing of ingredients…and, of course, the food had to be delicious. I ate a whole lot of tasty things; some of my favourites were the burger I made at The Bench in George, mussels from The Leopard in Melville, buffalo mozzarella from Swellendam and the chisa nyama from Soweto’s 707 Panyaza. -Rogers.

The already quite-tattooed Rogers even picked up some new body art along the way: “I got six new tattoos over a period of about 45 days so there was not much time to recover in between each one; but I loved getting them,” adds Rogers. “I’m still obsessed with an amazing koi fish I got done at Dok in Durban, but if truth be told, I love all my tattoos.”
