On Wednesday 27 July 2016, nature lovers are invited to join The Cape Leopard Trust and Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards at The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa for an exclusive three-course dinner and presentation uncovering the ground-breaking leopard and predator research currently underway. Tickets are priced at R535 per person, with R100 per person donated to the wildlife initiative.
Guests will gather in the Lion’s Head conference room for a welcome drink and an inspirational presentation by researchers Jeannie Hayward and Anita Meyer, who have worked with the Cape Leopard Trust for the past six years. Following the presentation, Executive Chef Christo Pretorius will serve a delectable three-course dinner with wine pairing from Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards in the award-winning Azure Restaurant.
The Cape Leopard Trust was established in 2004 to investigate and establish the presence of leopards in the Cape. During the presentation, Hayward and Meyer will share their experiences, and their work to study the Cape’s last remaining and free roaming big cats. This includes leopards who frequent local vineyards, as well as the savvy city caracals who have been recorded navigating Cape Town’s busy highways in order to share the area and exist in harmony with people.
The Cape Leopard Trust journey began in the Cederberg, and has taken researchers across to the Winelands and the southern and northern Cape to discover more about these enigmatic cats, their habitat and the challenges they face for survival. Nearer to the Cape Town city bowl, increasing human activity on the fringes of Table Mountain National Park has made the area too small to support leopards. The vacuum created by their departure has been taken up by the caracal (rooikat) and provided the inspiration for the Urban Caracal Project.
The Twelve Apostles and its sister property Bushmans Kloof, both part of The Red Carnation Hotel Collection, have been longstanding supporters of the Cape Leopard Trust. The Trust has a number of ongoing leopard and predator research projects in the Cape and a dynamic environmental education project. It advocates the protection of leopards and other predators in their natural environments and to enable this, promotes the need for conservation of ecosystems.
