A Bavarian Feast by the Sea: Kapstadt Brauhaus at Eden on the Bay

There are few things more Capetonian than a breezy stroll along the Blouberg promenade with Table Mountain standing proudly across Table Bay.

That’s exactly how this visit to Kapstadt Brauhaus began: a leisurely walk, salty sea air, and just enough time to admire the view before the clouds rolled in and nudged everyone indoors.

Luckily, Kapstadt Brauhaus is exactly where you want to be when the weather turns.

  • With plenty of parking at Eden on the Bay and a warm, lively interior, it offers the perfect refuge – especially for anyone craving hearty comfort food and a good drink. [full menu]

We kicked off the experience with a round of drinks that set a relaxed, celebratory tone. The Devil’s Peak Pale Ale is the kind of beer that makes you immediately ready for hearty food. The virgin strawberry daiquiri is also highly recommended which was fresh and fruity with just enough tartness to avoid being overly sweet, while the virgin piña colada leaned creamy and tropical, tasting like a mini holiday in a glass on a rainy day.

Starters Worth Sharing

The starters arrived generous and built for sharing, exactly what one hopes for in a proper beer hall. The Snack Platter was the ultimate table-opener (not really a starter, but we ordered it for the table) – a hearty spread of croquettes, fried calamari, pretzel, sticky ribs, and their signature schwein fries, all served with a punchy spicy mayo. Each element brought something different to the party.

The croquettes were crisp on the outside with a creamy, savoury center, while the calamari was tender and lightly fried, avoiding that rubbery texture that so often ruins the dish. The pretzel added that unmistakable salty bite, perfect for dipping, and the ribs delivered sweet, sticky richness with meat that pulled away easily.

A special shout out to the schwein fries which were pure indulgence. Crispy fries loaded with savoury pork goodness that made them disappear quickly. The spicy mayo tied everything together with a gentle heat and tang, making it the kind of platter that encourages everyone to reach in for “just one more bite.”

The crumbed mushrooms stood out for their earthy flavour. The crumb coating was crisp and light rather than heavy, allowing the juicy mushroom centers to shine. Paired with the creamy dipping sauce, they balanced savoury richness with a gentle tang.

Then came the Goldkelchen salad with grilled chicken, which proved far more indulgent than its leafy description suggested. Smoky bacon, creamy feta, ripe avocado, and crisp onions layered richness into every forkful, while the grilled chicken added something savoury. The blue cheese dressing brought a bold, slightly sharp creaminess that tied everything together, making this salad feel like a full meal.

German Classics Done Right

Kapstadt Brauhaus truly comes into its own with its mains, leaning confidently into traditional German flavours. Pizzas, burgers and seafood options are also available for those who aren’t convinced (yet).

The Eisbein was a triumph of texture and taste. The outer crackling was golden, delivering that satisfying crunch before giving way to tender pork beneath. The meat itself was savoury with a slow-cooked richness that lingered with every bite.

The sauerkraut cut through the fattiness with its bright, fermented tang, while the red cabbage added a subtle sweetness and warmth. A swipe of mustard brought a sharp, punchy finish. It’s the perfect contrast to the pork’s richness and a dish built on balance, – it absolutely delivered.

The Funghi Spätzle offered comfort in its creamiest form. The soft, pillowy spätzle soaked up the rich cheesey sauce, while mushrooms added a hint of umami. Crispy bacon pieces scattered through the dish introduced salty bursts and texture. It’s the kind of plate that feels like a hug. It’s indulgent, warming, and deeply satisfying.

The Wiener Dog, served in a glossy pretzel bun, was simple but full of flavour. The bun itself brought that distinctive pretzel chew and slight saltiness, while the Frankfurter delivered a smoky bite. Sauerkraut added brightness and crunch, and the mustard gave it a sharp, tangy kick. It’s leans into German street-food charm while still feeling restaurant-quality.

Beyond the menu, Kapstadt Brauhaus nails the atmosphere. It’s lively without being loud, and clearly designed for social gatherings. With large screens dotted around the venue, it’s an excellent spot to catch live sports: The kind of place where fans gather, beers flow, and cheers erupt at the right moments.
