Low Carb/High Fat Menu with Ke Monate @Signal Gun

The latest dietary trend by Professor Tim Noakes is being followed by many many people at the moment. And several restaurants are picking up on this. Signal Gun & Ke Monate Bistro are one of those eateries that have developed a unique menu for all those that are religiously keeping to a low carb/high fat diet.

Low Carb/High Fat Diet

It’s all based on humans being hunter/gatherers for thousand of years and that our bodies are designed for that type of nutrition. If you think about it, our diet has changed drastically in the past 50 years, while our bodies are designed for vastly different food-types. In theory, this diet will help to optimise your health, minimize your risk of chronic disease, while losing weight in the process.

Sounds good, – doesn’t it? We will all live forever!

Ke Monate @ Signal Gun

I’ve reviewed Ke Monate before; I’m a huge fan! It’s also one of the best breakfast spots in the Durbanville Winelands – we often go here on weekends!

The bistro is all about eating great food and enjoying a selection of superb Signal Gun wines. You can enjoy all of this in a relaxed atmosphere with stunning views of the Durbanville Valley. It’s just the perfect location for a lazy lunch  and that’s exactly what I did a few weeks ago when Signal Gun invited me to try their new low carb menu.

The menu is split into three sections: breakfast, lunch/dinner, and desserts. For breakfast, I probably would have gone for the skinny omelette. Anything with crispy bacon has my vote! But since I was at Signal Gun for lunch, I ordered a main and dessert.

I was looking for a lighter dish so I ordered the Hake with vegetables as my main. The fish was perfectly grilled, very delicate and came with a delicious lemon & herb sauce, which combined very well with the fish. Just what I wanted! It could have been a slightly larger portion so I was glad that I also ordered a dessert: A very creamy (and rich) home-made chocolate mousse which hit the spot in all the right places. I left Ke Monate satisfied as always.

Those with a bigger appetite should probably go for the 300g rump. My dad ordered the smaller version (200g) on the day, perfectly cooked medium rate. I stole a small piece when he wasn’t looking – it was juicy and delicious!

The lunch was accompanied by live music playing chilled rock covers. The band was fantastic and got a big hand towards the end! I was very impressed.

P.S.: This menu shouldn’t be the only reason to visit Signal Gun; there is so much more to experience on the Singal Gun Wine Estate: Of course you get the usual wine tasting cellar. But when the weather is good they also have amazing picnic baskets and offer Game Drives, where you can see a wide range of wild animals!
