Ke Monate @ Signal Gun Review

Ke-Monate @ Signal Gun is a small bistro style restaurant, specialising in tapas, local and international cuisine, located in the beautiful Durbanville winelands – a 30 minute drive from Cape Town.

Their menu has a variety of traditional dishes including pastas, exotic pizzas, and steaks among many other favourites, to be enjoyed with a great selection of their very own Signal Gun wines and other options from around the Durbanville Wine Valley.

I went to Ke Monate @ Signal Gun on a Wednesday evening, which is traditionally ‘Italian night’, with Italian specials on black board menu.

Penne with bacon and a blue cheese sauce.

If you’re a huge blue cheese fan (like me), you will just love the penne with bacon bits in a creamy and decadent blue cheese sauce! The sauce wasn’t too heavy or rich, but the perfect balance of smokiness from the bacon, and pungent cheese, toned down with cream. It was an absolute delight!

You won’t find the traditional (read: boring) pizza menu that’s on offer at most restaurants. At Ke Monate, ingredients such as figs, masala beef, roasted sweetened butternut, goat’s cheese, mango coulis for example, sit proudly on a pizza! Each pizza is made to order, with generous toppings, and is freshly prepared in their wood-fire pizza oven.

Caliber Pizza

Topped with goats cheese, figs, garlic, peppadews, and mozzarella cheese. The goats cheese, figs and peppadews had the perfect combination of sweet, creamy and tangy flavours. I’ve never had goats cheese or figs on pizza, and now no other pizza will ever be good enough!

Bombard Pizza

Green Thai chicken, feta, mixed peppers, caramelised onions and mozzarella cheese. The sweetness of the caramelised onions was a delicious touch, to balance out the kick from the Green Thai chicken. Mixed peppers added fragrance and colour, and the mozzarella gave it that delicious cheesiness every pizza needs, without being an overwhelming flavour.

I really enjoyed my evening at Ke Monate @ Signal Gun. The staff were attentive and the food was excellent. Their menu isn’t enourmous, but you will at something to set your sights on – it’s quite refreshing to not be overwhelmed with choice.

I love the fact that their pizzas offer something different. Ke Monate @ Signal Gun is truly a gem in the Durbanville winelands – pay them a visit, and get a pizza with figs and goat’s cheese for me!

PS. They also has an incredible breakfast menu served from 09h00 – 11h30.

PPS. Book a game drive, a picnic AND wine tasting at Signal Gun for ONLY R120 per person.
