Narona Review

The Flatmate came home from work the other night to find on the couch.

“Kayli, what’s wrong?” she asked hesitantly.
“Nothing”
“Umm… Are you sure?”
“Yes”
“Ok then” she walked towards her room.
“I’m hungry but I feel like home cooked food! There’s nothing in the fridge to cook but I don’t feel like going out and spending a lot of money! I need to write a review but I have nothing to write about! I don’t feel like getting all dressed up to go to a big fancy, pretentious restaurant. AND MY FEET ARE COLD!”
“So in other words, something is wrong?” she asked.
“Help me.”

Grumpasaurous Rex

Wonderful Flatmate then hit Google, insistent on finding Grumpy Kayli a restaurant that fulfilled all my needs.

And that is how we found Narona.

Flatmate made a booking, dragged me off the couch, threw me in the car, picked up a friend and before I knew it, I was sitting on a chair ordering a Bloody Mary.

The majority of the Narona menu is under R55 and they specialise in pizzas, pastas, and burgers.

Flatmate had a chicken burger, with avo and feta (R31) and my other friend and I shared a beef lasagne (R48) and a chicken burger with cheese and mushrooms (R31) and we all shared a big bowl of chips (R14).

Mushroom Burger

The chicken in both burgers was moist and in a seriously good marinade. There was lashings of cheese and plenty avo and mushrooms respectively. The beef lasagne, which in many restaurants is more sauce than filling, but this was jam-packed with quality mince, lasagne and the perfect balance between tomato- and cheese based sauce. The chips were golden and crispy, but soft on the inside. Mmm.

Narona can comfortably seat about 20 at tables inside, another 15 at the bar and 10 al fresco. They’re open 7 days a week and the kitchen runs from 10am-10pm.

The menu is affordable and homely, the vibe is relaxed, the staff are friendly, the drinks are are cheap. It is the perfect place to pop out for a meal when you don’t feel like being eye-balled for wearing a hoodie or spending too much – but still want to eat well.

There’s a branch in both Observatory and Gardens an I suppose I’m lucky that there isn’t one in Sea Point – pizza, pasta and burgers every night, certainly wouldn’t do me well.

PS: This is the online menu but prices may vary a tad.  http://www.narona.co.za/

PPS: There is a lot of pork on the menu, but they are very happy to swap toppings around.
