De Grendel has proudly won at the most influential wine and spirits awards in the world – CWSA – China Wine and Spirits Awards. Winning a Gold and Double Gold CWSA medal is the ultimate seal of approval in China – soon to be largest wine and spirits market in the world.

This year, De Grendel walked away with an incredible three awards at the CWSA.

Both the De Grendel Amandelboord Pinotage 2016 and the De Grendel Shiraz 2016 won Gold, and the De Grendel Rubaiyat 2015 won Double Gold, and was additionally named the South African Wine of the Year, which is a trophy award.

The De Grendel Rubaiyat 2015 is De Grendel’s flagship wine that was originally made in 2006 when winemaker Charles Hopkins was asked by Sir David Graaff to create an iconic estate wine. This wine is a classically poetic Bordeaux style blend consisting of a quatrain of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, and is named after Omar Khayyam’s exquisite collection of 1000 Persian love poems from the 10th century, held dear by the late Sir David.

“We are incredibly proud that our wines performed so well at CWSA 2018, especially so on the back of other prestigious awards,” reported Sir De Villiers Graaff, Managing Director at De Grendel. “We are very excited by the growth we are seeing in China.”

CWSA is the most influential wine and spirits competition in the world, helping to sell a staggering 90 million bottles per year. Long renowned internationally as the biggest and most prestigious wine and spirits competition in China, CWSA Judges are the most powerful buyers in China.

“China’s thirst for foreign wine and spirits continues to grow and we expect China to be the largest market for wines and spirits within 2 years,” a CWSA spokesman said. “To help international producers take advantage of this huge opportunity, CWSA brought together the 100 most influential wine and spirits buyers to Judge CWSA 2018.”

CWSA 2018 rated a staggering 6,000 samples from 58 countries around the world. High profile entrants include Peter Lehmann, Jacob’s Creek, Bardinet, Bernard Magrez, Kim Crawford, Casa Ermelinda Freitas, Dewar’s and Label 5.
