Craft Burger Bar Review

How well do you handle pressure?

Craft Burger Bar is a trendy little restaurant on 82 Regent Street in Sea Point. We joined them for dinner on a Friday evening, with the restaurant in full swing and hardly an empty table to be seen – a sign of good things to come. The restaurant has become famous for their ‘Create your own Burger’ menu, which gives you the chance to create thousands of unique burgers. It’s easy to feel the heat as you try to find the perfect combo, by choosing from different cheeses and gourmet toppings to craft the best burger the world has ever seen! No pressure.

For those that don’t cope well with so much choice, a small gourmet burger menu is also available.

How does it work?

Put away the knives and forks, people! Burgers should be eaten with your hands. The hamburger buns and patties at Craft Burger Bar are the perfect size to make this possible. But be warned – since they’re very generous with their toppings, it becomes a little messier if you order a sauce or more than 3 toppings.

Create your own Burger

Chicken or Beef; bun or no bun; rare, medium or well done? Add 4 toppings and your basic burger is complete.

Afterwards, the fun begins. The clever and streamlined menu layout allows you to be creative with your creation, without having to worry about the combinations not working.  A range of toppings are available to choose from, to create a burger as you see fit. After your masterpiece is complete, all you have to do is to pick a side and the burger is complete.

Each of us ordered beef burgers that evening. The patties were succulent and full of flavour, so there is actually no need for a sauce.

Craft Burger Bar Review

A simple cheese burger along with tomato, gherkin and red onion: it allowed for the full flavour of the patty to come through with the mild bite of the gherkin and red onions adding a nice contrast to the mellow richness of the cheese and beef combination. The deep-fried onion rings were crisp, light and not at all oily or overwhelming – it was the perfect accompaniment to the usual chips that normally accompany a burger

We’re all familiar with a Quattro Formaggi pizza; we took it on ourselves to create an equivalent burger with a full complement of cheeses. Onions, tomato, gherkins and traditional thick-cut fries completed the cheesiest burger there ever was.

It might not be the most adventurous choice but Camembert, bacon and avocado make a pretty sweet combo, – especially on a burger. The Yam chips (sweet potato) were really delicious and crispy.

Overall, we enjoyed a fantastic evening at Craft Burger Bar with friendly service and very good burgers. I love the fact that their focus is always on creating your own, but that there are options for those who need them. With so many combinations yet untested, I will be back very soon.

P.S.: A craft bar wouldn’t be complete without a selection of craft beers. However, traditional national brands don’t even make it onto the drinks menu. It’s craft or nothing!
