Tygerberg Hospital Paediatric Infectious Disease Clinic Appeal

The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust is supporting the Paediatric Infectious Diseases clinic at Tygerberg hospital which is part of the Specialised Care Basket.

The Trust is appealing for assistance for the Food 4 Families campaign in support of patients and their families.

The Food 4 Families campaign seeks to secure 40 food parcels per week commencing on 2nd October, which will be distributed to adolescents and their families when they attend the clinic.

Each year this clinic takes the adolescent Chronic Care patients to youth camps and fun outings but due to Covid-19 they realised that there is a bigger need to feed the patients attending the clinic.

The Paediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic has approximately 250 patients under the age of 18-years old. Patients are admitted to the clinic after being diagnosed with an infectious disease such as HIV or TB. Adolescent patients are transferred out once their treatment has stabilised, however they may remain in the care of Tygerberg Hospital particularly if they reside in the surrounding areas.

Clinics and Outreach Services are also provided at other facilities so that patients have easier access to treatment. Patients receive chronic and ongoing treatment for conditions that are not curable and therefore need medication and healthy nutrition to keep their disease under control.

The Paediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic is based in the same location as the Adult Infectious Diseases Unit at Tygerberg Hospital, which makes it easier for families who need to attend the Clinics together. Adolescent patients of the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic come from areas such as Tygerberg, Bellville, Blue Downs, Eersteriver, Westbank, Brackenfell, Gordon’s Bay, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Kuils River, Macassar, Somerset West and Strand and sometimes also much further afield.

The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust is appealing for assistance or cash donations to purchase the following grocery items to make food parcels for the adolescent patients and their families of the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic at Tygerberg Hospital.
