The Great Gatsby at Spier

The famous novel, The Great Gatsby, has recently come out of copyright, and the film is due to be released early next year, sparking a renewed interest in the work, and the glitz and glamour of the 20s. From 20 November to 31 December 2012, Spier will be hosting an interactive stage adaptation of the novel, following a sold-out run in London.

The Great Gatsby Spier

It’s 1922, a few years before the catastrophic collapse of the American stock markets. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel graphically portrays a society being destroyed by money and dishonesty – an American Dream of happiness and individualism degenerating into the mere pursuit of wealth.

The period is the pinnacle of decadence. Prohibition made millionaires out of bootleggers; the streets were awash with guns and gangsters. To escape it all, people consumed vast amounts of illegal alcohol and danced the night away…

The book was recently adapted by Peter Joucla who also directs the show. Produced by the team from Wilton’s Music Hall in London, the adaptation incorporates singing and dancing between and within the scenes.

My aim is to present a stage adaptation of The Great Gatsby in a way which captures the essence of Fitzgerald’s novel, which evokes the world and context in which it is set, and which highlights some of the similarities and differences between that period and contemporary life – Joucla.

People are invited to dress in their 20s best, and there will be interactive, Gatsby-style food and entertainment before the show, during interval and after the show. Expect live jazz, late night foxtrots, moonshine in teapots, pearls and flappers, bootleggers and millionaires and unbridled hedonism on the Spier lawns!

Ticket price R630 per person, includes show, Gatsby-themed food and Spier Signature wine. Book through Computicket. Alternatively, you can try your luck and enter our competition on Twitter. We will be giving away 2 sets of double tickets on Monday – the 12th November. The prize includes the show, dinner & wine. Just follow the instructions and stand a chance to win!
