De Grendel Wine wins Gold in Japan

De Grendel Viognier 2019 and Merlot 2017 earned gold medals at the 2020 Sakura Japan Women’s Wine Awards.

The awards, now in its 7th edition, were judged by the blind tasting of 560 Japanese female wine professionals consisting of winemakers, sommeliers, buyers, educators and journalists. They tasted over 4300  wines from 29 countries.

Japan is an important, and growing market for us and supports our planned growth in exports. Earning awards like this helps to position our wines in a highly competitive market and puts them directly in front of the Japanese consumer in traditional and online wine supermarkets and specialist wine stores, De Grendel’s marketing manager, Righard Theron, said.

The Merlot 2017 has smooth berry notes and aromas of aniseed, cedar and liquorice and pairs well with lamb roast. The Viognier 2019’s rich floral and ripe peach, apricot and dried apple notes go excellently with rich pasta, chicken and pork dishes.

The competition’s highest award, the Diamond Trophy, and special Grand Prix awards, will be announced in March at Foodex Japan 2020, where all the awarded wines will be on show.

Get these wines at the De Grendel tasting room, at major retailers or order online at the De Grendel online store.
