Bistro 1800 Review

Unless I am on holiday somewhere, hotels have always seemed felt like the place for tourists. They’re just not the first place that pops into mind when I am planning a dinner. And wrongly so. Come to think of it, we should visit hotels more often to keep them on their toes – tourists come and go, but locals expect more over time. One hotel that has decided that it is time to embrace the locals is The Cape Royale, and their restaurant, Bistro 1800.

Cape Royale’s Bistro 1800˚ gets some va-va-voom.

After a quick tour of the rooms where we saw what a romantic and child-friendly room welcoming looked like (they’re pretty “craycray” as the kids of today like to say), we ventured up to the roof for delicious cocktails from Red Bull, platters of oysters and a view I would kill for.

Chef Jonathan Gargan and Food and Beverage manager, George Sakulias, have chosen local, fresh ingredients to create a simple, healthy, uncomplicated but delicious menu. “The concept created for Bistro 1800 ˚ is hearty, comfort food where the guest may treat themselves to an experience that is authentic, but homely” says Sakulias.

The name Bistro 1800˚ is derived from the restaurant’s signature New York-style grill, which cooks the perfect steak at exactly 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. The grill seals the juices and allows the flavours to open up. Other than the wide variety of specially selected succulent steaks, new dishes also include Grilled lion of Lamb (R135); phyllo baked Atlantic Salmon (R139); Kingklip en papilote (125) and Slow roast breast of duck (R125).

The new menu is as inviting as the staff are – I was so impressed by the care and consiuderation that went into the organisation of the event. While it was an event rather than a “normal” dinner trying out the dishes as they would generally be served, everything was delicious. But for a full review of the food – I’ll need to go again.
