Big Momma’s – Spread the Love through Social Good

Big Momma’s was opened to cater for traditional home cooked meals with an emphasis on everyday cuisine that is the staple diet of majority of Africans of all races across the continent.

The aim was to provide the wholesome, affordable, simple food that we grew up eating everyday.

The current pandemic has exacerbated what was already a difficult situation for vulnerable subsections of the communities in which we operate in.

This realisation is what led the owners of Big Momma’s to look for a way to assist in anyway possible, given the productive capacity – staff, premises and equipment, that they already have by leveraging off the good hearts of the customer community to help the team to do something meaningful.

Big Momma’s was opened with the intention of reminding everyone of the love and care that our mothers provided to us while growing up and the plan is to pass on that love to those who need it most during this time.

Currently the restaurant is supporting the Cape Town Multi Service Centre (CTMSC), after one of the directors reached out and asked for assistance during this unprecedented time. As part of it’s social work, CTMSC operates a Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) in Salt River.

The CYCC is currently home to 35 boys aged from 10 years old to 18 years old. These boys are placed at the Centre by court order, and come from high risk communities in which gang violence is prevalent and family conditions are not ideal. The Centre aims to provide a healthy and stable environment for the children to develop.

Big Momma have been providing daily meals for the children through generous donations from friends, family and customers, and most recently thanks to the support of the Eat Out Restaurant Relief Fund. They would love to continue working with CTMSC and their noble cause, but as you can expect, the economic impact of the lockdown has also significantly affected the benefactors and they do not expect this source of funding to be ongoing.

Therefore we are in the process of a fundraising drive that will allow Big Momma to continue to help and assist the CTMSC:

  • Provide for the children’s basic needs
  • Place them in schools
  • Offer opportunities for them to join various programmes and fun activities
  • Place them in therapeutic programmes
  • Provide a healthy, stable and safe environment for them
