A limited-edition Pinotage brings South African wine and art together at La Petite Ferme

Summary: La Petite Ferme’s THE ZA Pinotage 2024 is a strictly limited Collector’s Edition wine made from old bush vines in Piekenierskloof, Citrusdal. Only 866 individually numbered bottles have been produced, each signed by winemaker Wikus Pretorius and featuring artwork by South African artist Jolien Koen. The wine is available through La Petite Ferme’s online shop, with the first 30 collectors eligible for exclusive Founders Collection benefits.

Some bottles are made to be opened on a special occasion. Others arrive with a story that makes them tempting additions to the cellar.

THE ZA Pinotage 2024, The Collector’s Release, from La Petite Ferme aims to do both, bringing together old-vine winemaking, South African artistic talent and a strictly limited release of just 866 bottles.

Crafted from old bush vines planted in 1974 in Piekenierskloof, Citrusdal, THE ZA reflects the vineyard’s character and La Petite Ferme’s four decades of boutique winemaking.

  • Winemaker Wikus Pretorius has shaped a blend of 95% Old Vine Pinotage and 5% Old Vine Cinsault into a wine described as intense and vibrant, with dark red fruit, ripe cherries and plum. Powdery tannins coat the palate, leading to a long, elegant finish. The winemaking process adds another layer to the story. The grapes were handpicked at between 23.5 and 24.5 Balling, then fermented in open fermenters for 10 days, with the cap punched down by hand every eight hours. The wine was subsequently matured in older 600-litre French oak barrels for 13 months.

The wine is only part of the appeal. Each of the 866 bottles is individually numbered and signed by Wikus Pretorius, making every bottle part of this inaugural release. After a purchase, the La Petite Ferme team contacts the buyer personally to select a bottle number and register their details, so that an official Certificate of Authenticity can be issued.

The original label also gives the release a distinctly South African creative identity. Designed by emerging artist Jolien Koen, the artwork celebrates the country’s landscapes, plants, birds, soil and vines. Koen’s design was selected from work by 13 final-year Illustration students at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design & Photography.

The project brings wine and art together in a way that supports the next generation of creative talent. A portion of the proceeds will contribute to South African art education and emerging artists, giving collectors another reason to appreciate the story behind the bottle.

THE ZA is also intended as the first chapter of an evolving collection. Each future vintage will introduce a new wine, a new artist and an original label, giving collectors the opportunity to follow the series as it develops. The first 30 collectors have the opportunity to join The Founders Collection, which includes a range of exclusive benefits:

  • Priority selection of bottle number
  • A signed Collector Certificate
  • Dinner for two paired with THE ZA Pinotage
  • Breakfast overlooking the Franschhoek Valley
  • A preferred accommodation rate
  • First access to future editions

For wine enthusiasts, the release offers a chance to own a piece of South African wine and art history from its very first edition. It can be enjoyed on a special occasion, kept in the cellar or become the starting point of a collection built around future releases. With only 866 bottles available and no repeat of this edition planned, THE ZA Pinotage 2024 brings together the character of old-vine Pinotage, a distinctive artistic label and a limited-release story. Collectors can explore the release through La Petite Ferme’s online shop and become part of the collection from its beginning.
