Author Marita van der Vyver and her new book Winter Food in Provence is the focus of a special writer’s dinner to be held at the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl on Saturday 19 July, in collaboration with the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument and NB Publishers.

Van der Vyver is one of South Africa’s favourite authors, with ten book prizes to her name. Her first adult novel, the highly controversial “Griet skryf ’n sprokie”, quickly became a bestseller which has been reprinted many times. She has stayed in the public eye, even more so since her marriage to a Frenchman and her new life in France, which is also the theme of her popular columns. She is also known for her TV series, MaritaKook, on KykNET.
The function begins at 18:00 and includes a four course dinner with paired wines. Van der Vyver will discuss her new book Winter Food in Provence which includes her favourite recipes and food stories. The book is aimed at the South African cook and all the ingredients are available locally.
Tickets for the writer’s dinner are R495. Twenty percent of ticket sales will go to the Taalmuseum’s Laat ons Lees! (Let’s Read) project . Hundreds of children have benefited since the project was started in 2013. In Porterville in the Western Cape, the Taalmonument supplies books to adults who once a week read to children in their streets; in Oesterbaai in the Eastern Cape, books were sponsored for learners of the Sandwater Primary School who attend school in a community hall; and in Drakenstein the museum sponsors free copies of the local newspaper to a different school each quarter.
