Renowned the world over as ‘black gold’, the culinary delicacy of fresh truffles is often a hot topic for conversation – not only for their fetching price and scarcity, but mostly for the captivating way in which they add unmistakable dimension to a dining experience.
Anthonij Rupert Wyne in Franschhoek is proudly the first wine estate in South Africa to both cultivate and sell black Perigord Truffles.
Specially cultivated oak forests with just the right cool climate, holds the key to their exceptional quality. Here, truffle hunter or “trufelau” Hanene van Dyk – who studied her craft in Piedmont, Italy – works closely with her specially-trained Lagotto Romagnolo dogs to unearth perfectly ripe truffles in the soil surrounding the oak roots.
Since 2019, epicureans have been treated to an array of uniquely designed, truffle-inspired dining and educational experiences at Anthonij Rupert. With the harvest season limited to just two months in our South African climate, there is no better time than to experience these rare delights at their freshest and most flavourful.
This year, there will be informal luncheons throughout the months of June and July, as well as several hosted functions where guests can meet Hanene and discover more about South Africa’s emerging truffle market. All dining experiences feature four courses, each designed to best showcase truffles and each paired with wines from the acclaimed, terroir-driven Cape of Good Hope Wines range.
