Recipe by Future Farm: Meatless Meatballs make Mid-week Meals a breeze

Looking for quick and easy recipes that don’t involve meat?

Future Meatballs can be cooked in practically any way you’d cook regular meatballs. They look like meat, feel like meat but are totally plant-based. So, they are perfect for when you’re trying to eat more sustainably and healthily but need easy and convenient alternatives to your usual meat recipes.

You could simply cook your Future Meatballs (5 minutes in a pan, or 7 minutes in an air fryer) and toss them in your favourite sauce, served with spaghetti or noodles, pap or mashed potato. Or get a little creative with this quick recipe for sticky Mongolian meatballs.

Sticky Mongolian meatballs

The Asian aromas of hoisin sauce, ginger, garlic and soy sauce come together beautifully in this sticky sauce, transforming the basic meatball succulence and bite into a flavour-packed weekday feast.

Ingredients

  • Future Farm meatballs⁠
  • Cracked black pepper⁠
  • ½ cup water⁠
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar⁠
  • ¼ cup soy sauce⁠
  • 4 cloves garlic grated⁠
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil⁠
  • 2 tablespoons grated ginger⁠
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce⁠
  • ⅛ teaspoon chilli flakes⁠
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper⁠
  • 3 spring onions⁠, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds⁠
  • Cooked noodles⁠ to serve

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C
  2. Line a baking tray with foil and put the meatballs on it. Drizzle with sesame oil and season with cracked pepper. Bake for 8-10 minutes until browned.
  3. Mix brown sugar and water in a small saucepan. Add the soy sauce, grated garlic and ginger, hoisin sauce, chili flakes and white pepper and mix well.
  4. Cook the sauce ingredients over a low heat, stirring frequently for 5-8 minutes until the sauce is nicely sticky.
  5. Toss the cooked meatballs with the sauce. Use some of the sauce to toss with the cooked noodles. Serve the meatballs on the noodles and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and thinly sliced spring onions.
