Are you SA Chef’s Plant-Based Chef of the Year?

Live chefs’ competition announced at The Good Life Show! 

As part of its collaboration with The Good Life Show, the SA Chefs Association is thrilled to extend an invitation to all aspiring chefs to enter the ‘Plant-Based Chef of the Year’ competition which will take place live at the show, over the three day event.

Not only will the winners, in both the junior and senior categories, be named ‘Plant-Based ‘Chef of the Year’, but they will also be given a coveted place to take part in the 2028 Culinary Olympics.

  • The competition commences with regional rounds hosted at the Good Life Show in Johannesburg and Cape Town. These regional contests will serve as preliminary rounds to identify the standout chefs in each city. The ultimate winner will emerge through a head-to-head competition, pitting each regional winner against one another. The crowned winner will then earn the prestigious title of South African Chef of the Year – Plant Based Division.

Registrations for the competition will open on 30 March 2024 ahead of the Cape Town event.

SA Chef’s President, James Khoza says: “Hosting a competition such as this gives the participants the opportunity to showcase their flair by experimenting with an array of plant-based products. Things are constantly evolving in the culinary world and, with many consumers opting to embrace a plant-based diet, a competition such as this gives chefs the chance to navigate a new way of cooking.”

Competition Criteria

  • Upon registering for the competition, all participants to submit:
  • ID
  • Proof of SA Chefs Membership
  • Letter of Motivation
  • Resume
  • Portfolio
  • All participants must be registered members of the South African Chefs Association in order to compete in the competition.
  • All dishes prepared in this competition must be 100% vegan/plant-based; no animal products are allowed.
  • Competitors should possess fundamental culinary skills necessary to execute their chosen dishes effectively and demonstrate originality and creativity in their dishes.
  • Participants should demonstrate good sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Categories

Competitors may choose to enter one or more of the following categories:

  • Hot Kitchen – Individuals
  • Exhibitions – Culinary Arts & Pastry Arts.

Judging Criteria

Dishes will be evaluated based on taste, presentation, creativity, and adherence to the vegan/plant-based requirement. A panel of esteemed judges will evaluate each dish and select the winners.

The Good Life Show

The Good Life Show takes place at the Kyalami International Convention Centre (KICC) from Friday, July 26, to Sunday, July 28, and features four shows under one roof; The Plant Powered Show, Natural & Organic Show, Free-From Show and Sustainex. 

All shows are aimed at those with an interest in food, health, wellness, the environment, or conscious living. The show is also open to various trade industries such as retail, restaurant, hotel, hospitality, as well as local distributors and exporters who are looking for innovative, high-quality products.
