The winter months in the Western Cape remind me of my time working in the kitchens of Scotland and Germany.
In those regions, winter dining centres on warmth, comfort and bold flavours that cut through the cold.
On Sunday, 19 July 2026, Christo Hattingh and his culinary team is bringing that European festive spirit to the Moody Lagoon Restaurant for a Christmas in July celebration.
- At Benguela Cove, they focus on a farm-to-table philosophy. The team source ingredients from local producers to ensure every dish reflects the Overberg region. For this mid-winter feast, they have designed a menu that honours South African heritage while applying the contemporary techniques the chef has developed during his international career.
The Christmas in July Menu
Benguela Cove begins the afternoon with a traditional welcome drink of warm mulled wine. To start, they serve a milkbun wreath accompanied by a selection of flavoured butters. For the main course, guests select one core meat for their table:
- Turkey with cranberry sauce
- Gammon with pineapple and BBQ basting
- Chicken with traditional stuffing
Tables accompany their main choice with a traditional potato salad and a selection of two hot side vegetables: roasted baby potatoes, mixed vegetables with peppadews and olive oil, or a cumin and coriander carrot mash. To finish, they offer canapé-style desserts: cream puffs filled with cinnamon mousse and a signature Benguela Christmas Pudding served with whipped cream.
Every element of this menu complements the estate’s cool-climate, maritime wines. Whether you prefer a crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a robust Syrah, the cellar team assists with pairings that elevate the dining experience.
Why Winter at Benguela Cove?
Benguela Cove sits on the edge of the lagoon. During July, the landscape transforms. The mist over the water and the greenery of the Kogelberg Biosphere create a unique backdrop for a long Sunday lunch. The restaurant provides a weather-proof sanctuary where you can enjoy panoramic views while remaining shielded from the winter elements.
