The Sandbar Brunch: A Once-a-Year Wine Experience on the Water at Benguela Cove

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is inviting guests to experience one of Walker Bay’s most distinctive spring events, The Sandbar Brunch, taking place on Sunday, 11 October 2026.

Limited to just 20 guests, this intimate, all-inclusive experience combines a pontoon boat journey, a harvest table brunch, exceptional Benguela Cove wines and personal time with the estate’s winemakers and Cellar Master, Johann Fourie.

The morning begins at 09:00 as guests board the Lady Bonnie pontoon boat for a crossing to the sandbar, the narrow strip of land separating the lagoon from the open waters of Walker Bay.

  • Guests are divided into two groups of 10, creating a relaxed and personal experience rather than a large-scale event.  While one group explores the sandbar with a winemaker, the other spends time at the boathouse overlooking the lagoon with the cellar master. At 10:00, everyone comes together for a generous harvest table brunch, served family style and hosted by two winemakers. Later in the morning, the groups swap experiences before returning to dry land at approximately 13:00.

October is also whale season in Walker Bay, adding another layer of magic to this already unusual setting. Southern right whales are often active in the area at this time of year, although sightings can never be guaranteed. The experience is designed first and foremost around the boat journey, lagoon, food, wine and extraordinary setting.

Set within the Bot River wetland, a RAMSAR-listed site, Benguela Cove offers visitors the chance to experience wine country from an entirely different perspective, surrounded by water, vineyards and the natural beauty of the Walker Bay coastline.

The Sandbar Brunch is priced at R1,450 per person, all-inclusive, covering the boat crossing, harvest table brunch and cellar master experience.

With only 20 places available and the event taking place once a year, this is a genuinely limited experience for wine lovers, food enthusiasts and visitors looking for something beyond the traditional wine estate visit.
