City Nature Challenge at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Turns a Morning Walk into a Global Biodiversity Mission

At Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, the focus shifts from fast-paced racing to something far more grounded, nature.

The upcoming City Nature Challenge invites the public to slow down, look closer, and take part in documenting the biodiversity of the Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area.

Taking place on Saturday, 25 April 2026 from 09h00 to 11h00, the event is part of a global citizen science initiative powered by iNaturalist.

  • Participants explore the area, photograph plants, birds, insects, and other wildlife, and upload their observations to contribute to a worldwide biodiversity database. The Kenilworth conservation area is known for its rich fynbos ecosystem, making it an ideal setting for spotting unique species, whether it’s a brightly coloured sunbird, a flowering plant, or something smaller that might otherwise go unnoticed.

No prior experience is needed, just a phone, a bit of curiosity, and a willingness to look a little closer at what’s already there. It’s equal parts outdoor activity and learning experience, with a social, community-driven feel.

At its core, the City Nature Challenge at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth is about noticing what’s often overlooked and sharing it with the world, one observation at a time. Participants can RSVP via email: kenilworthC1@racecoast.co.za.
