Women also experience menopause, which can lead to physical and psychological symptoms.\u201d<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where we have to consider the functional properties of those lovely nutty and creamy supermarket mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) we favour in our salads, sauces and soups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe antioxidant activity of mycochemicals derived from mushrooms plays a significant role in the defence and repair systems against oxidative damage and free radicals, which accelerate the ageing process,\u201d says the review.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, ergothioneine, found more in brown Agaricus bisporus like Portabellinis and Portabellos, \u201chas been shown to scavenge free radicals, particularly those affecting the mitochondrial membrane, thus reducing oxidative stress on the skin.\u201d Definitely better than a month of facials!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>So, where else do mushrooms play the role of a girl\u2019s BFF?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heart disease<\/strong> \u2013 risk rises in women after menopause:\u00a0Two compounds found in button mushrooms, ergothioneine, which is an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant, and beta-glucans, a type of dietary fibre, both promote better heart health.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breast cancer \u2013 and immunity:\u00a0<\/strong>According to a 2020 Indonesian study titled Lectins from the edible mushroom Agaricus bisporus and their therapeutic potentials, \u201cAgaricus bisporus extracts inhibit the growth of epithelial and breast cancer cells as well as induce innate and adaptive immunity. Inclusion of the mushroom as part of the daily diet lowers the risk of breast cancer for postmenopausal women.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gut health \u2013 it\u2019s a mood booster:\u00a0<\/strong>Mushrooms are considered prebiotics as they have non-digestible elements like chitin, a polysaccharide, and beta-glucans, a soluble fibre. These feed bacteria in the gut and promote good gut health. In turn, a favourable gut biome has been shown to uplift mood, and even aid in alleviating feelings of depression and anxiety. Feel-good fungi for the win there!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stress \u2013 and uncomfortable hot flushes:\u00a0<\/strong>Mushrooms \u201care high in selenium, a mineral that aids in the reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation,\u201d explains Dr Zara Khan from the Revive Research Institute in the US. \u201cStress causes an increase in epinephrine, which can lead to hot flashes. Mushrooms even open up many plant-based meal options \u2013 we think you\u2019ll find that Mushroom Noodle Jars <a href=\"https:\/\/rebrand.ly\/5bu6rb7\">https:\/\/rebrand.ly\/5bu6rb7<\/a> aren\u2019t just for students!<\/p>\n<p>Packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein, antioxidants and more, mushrooms allow women to eat well (read satisfyingly, deliciously, gloriously!) while delivering big on nutrients, without anyone having to reach for the supplement bottles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thanks Agaricus bisporus \u2026 we love you too, bestie! <\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Baked Fish with Mushroom Caponata <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Serves 4-6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 onions, diced<\/li>\n<li>2 green peppers, chopped<\/li>\n<li>500g white button mushrooms, sliced<\/li>\n<li>100g black kalamata olives, pitted &amp; sliced in half<\/li>\n<li>50g capers<\/li>\n<li>3 Tbsp tomato paste<\/li>\n<li>2 Tbsp water<\/li>\n<li>1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp dried oregano<\/li>\n<li>Salt &amp; pepper<\/li>\n<li>Olive oil<\/li>\n<li>700g white fish, filleted &amp; deboned<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp dried oregano<\/li>\n<li>2 cloves garlic, finely minced<\/li>\n<li>350g baby potatoes, to serve<\/li>\n<li>Fresh dill, for serving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a nonstick frying pan and saut\u00e9 the onion until tender. Add the green pepper and mushrooms and simmer over medium-high heat for a few minutes until all the water is cooked out of the mushrooms.<\/li>\n<li>Add the tomato paste and oregano and cook for 2 minutes. Add the water and vinegar and simmer. Finally add the olives and capers and taste for seasoning. Simmer for a few minutes to blend flavours.<\/li>\n<li>Preheat oven to 220\u02daC, move rack to the top third of the oven and line a baking tray with baking paper.<\/li>\n<li>Brush the baking paper with olive oil and place the fish on top.<\/li>\n<li>Season the fish well with salt, pepper and oregano. Drizzle the top with olive oil and spread the garlic evenly over the fillets.
