Winter Set Menu Review at Cape Milner

Every winter Cape Town becomes a little bit less outgoing and a little more housebound. We prefer to stay indoors, keeping warm and staying cozy in familiarity, but this need not be the case!

Winter menus and special winter rates allow us to try out places during the colder months of the year, which we would have missed during sunnier months.

The Cape Milner is offering an escape to their modern yet homely boutique hotel. Here you will find good food, lovely décor and a friendly yet non overbearing server. The Glass Lounge is lined with plush couches and large scatter cushions to make you feel right at home. Perfect for an intimate date night or just a drink at the bar. 2 On Main, in contrast, offers a sophisticated touch with white linen, elegant finishes and a golden hue – ask them if their fireplace will be crackling upon making your reservation!

Of course, although the décor may play a vital role in creating the perfect ambiance, what we really want to know is – what’s on the menu? Well, I have 3 words for you: hearty, steamy and McDreamy.

To kick it all off we enjoyed the crumbed Camembert starter served with cranberries, French loaf and Cumberland sauce – good – as well as the creamy coconut and sweetcorn soup, which was presented beautifully and served with a few nacho chips, which would have been GREAT had they been a tad fresher.

Looking for something a little more substantial we opted for the wild mushroom ragout with cranberry dumplings and the lamb Rogan Josh with roasted seasonal veg and basmati rice. Round 2 was won by the latter, which I found to be a quintessential winter-warmer every comfort food lover MUST try. Not only was the lamb soft and succulent, but the olive oil roasted vegetables had me like Anton Ego and his beloved ratatouille.

Ending off the evening we ordered the baked apple stuffed with dried fruit and, the sweetener of it all being, Malva pudding and vanilla custard. A South African favourite.

Special mention needs to go to the Leopard’s Leap Chenin Blanc, which we found very easy drinking and an overall fair pairing with each dish – keeping in mind that it was not intended to be a food and wine pairing menu.

Choose between the 2-course option at R230 or the 3-course option at R280 per person. Both include a complimentary glass of Leopard’s Leap Merlot or Chenin Blanc and are valid from 1 June 2018 to 30 September 2018.

The hotel also has a wonderful winter rates special on offer, stay for three nights and only pay for two when booking a standard room at The Cape Milner. Valid until the end of September 2018.

If you’re thinking of having a staycation or cosy weekend in Cape Town, look no further than The Cape Milner, the perfect urban escape.
