Knock, knock. Who’s there? HQ Comedy Night! Wednesday 03 September 2014, the sophisticated urban hotspot will host a night of good food, good spirits and plenty of giggles. The elegant steakhouse-come-bar have made no bones about the fact they offer the best steak experience in town; and now they’ve added tickling your funny bone to their list of accomplishments.
The night will be hosted by premier South African funny man, Gareth Woods, and he’ll be accompanied by headliner Rob van Vuuren and middle man Mum-z, comedians all at the top of their game.
HOST – Gareth Woods:
Gareth’s style is one of witty and anecdotal analysis of life’s everyday occurrences and is sure to put a fresh lens on the ordinary. Ranging from dry one-liners to quirky observations and maybe a song or two, the man they call Gareth is one to watch.
His accomplishments include winning the 5fm Fresh Drive Comedy Competition 2009, opening for Trevor Noah’s one man show Daywalker, featuring on Comedy Central Live at Parkers with Casper de Vries, winning first place in the KZN provincial Toastmaster’s International Speech Contest 2012 (3rd place in Africa), and performing at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, Splashy Fen, White Mountain and Rocking the Daisies.
HEADLINER – Rob van Vuuren
Rob became a comedian by mistake while he was trying to be an actor. It was bound to happen though, if you consider his shortness to awesomeness ratio multiplied by his genius and augmented by the fact that he is a bit of a dick.
In the year 2000 Rob teamed up with obnoxiously talented tall person Louw Venter and the proud couple promptly gave birth to Corne and Twakkie and The Most Amazing Show.
Rob has subsequently worked hard in comedy clubs throughout South Africa to become a hysterically funny, well-respected and bankable host and headline comedian. The fact that Rob was voted as the Breakthrough Act Award Winner at the inaugural Comic Choice Awards by his peers pays testament to this.
MIDDLE MAN – Mum-z
Mum-z is a self proclaimed coconut and has a view on life, a sense of humour and a stage presence that is unique and addictive. He is a two-time SAFTA Award winning comedian for his involvement in ZA News. His 7-year career in comedy has afforded him the opportunity to perform at Blacks Only 6 times, Mind The Gap, Real Heavy Weight Comedy Jam, Rocking the Daisies and The Nandos Comedy Festival. He has performed comedy for The Presidency Republic of South Africa and starred in the recent TV comedy series “Marc Lottering, Loitering in Jozi”.
The comedy show will take place in the bar area; think exposed heritage brick walls, moody lighting, and leather seating. Cocktails, wine and premium spirits will be on offer, paired with new and delicious tapas from the bar menu.
The word on the street is that if you would like to make an evening of it, HQ Comedy Night will be accompanied by a set three course meal and Grolsch pairing, taking place before the giggles for only R200 per person.
