Top 5 Weird Beers

Since there are many beer festivals in Cape Town happening during the next few weeks, we had a look at some beers you should think twice about drinking. I don’t think these are available in South Africa but you have been warned – drink at own risk!

1. Beer for Dogs

Those hoping to get drunk with their four-legged friend are in for a disappointment though, Kwispel is non-alcoholic. It’s only there to bring cool relief to thirsty dogs. Marketed as “a beer for your best friend”, the tipple is brewed to taste like beef.

2. Chilli Beer

Loooking for a proper punch in the face from your brew. Then maybe you need a beer that has some jalapeno added to the mix. A straw poll of reviews on beeradvocate.com however suggests Chilli Beer isnt a match made in pub heaven sadly. The reviews state that it looks unappealing, it smells unappealing, and it tastes like watered-down hot sauce.

3. Santa’s Butt

Nothing special here except that the name is a bit unfortunate. A butt is actually a reference to a large 108 gallon barrel.

4. Pizza Beer

Do you enjoy pizza? Do you enjoy beer? Then this might be something for you! Mamma Mia Pizza Beer is the world’s first culinary alcoholic drink. Made from a variety of vegetables, this beer is finished off with a strong aroma of Italian spices. The result, something called pizza beer – fabulous!

5. Milk Beer

Bilk is a combination of beer and milk! It’s a huge hit in Japan apparently but I don’t think I would pour this over my Cornflakes for breakfast! The brewers came up with the idea for the sickly-sounding drink as a way of dealing with an oversupply of milk due to falling consumption. Clever!
