The Story of Distillery Road Gin

Do you know the story?

Autograph Distillery’s third gin, Distillery Road Gin, derives its name from its home at 13 Distillery road, Stellenbosch. Its story begins in the 19th century on a steam train at Bosman’s Siding, where barrels were loaded onto the vessel during the night to set off for sale in the morning. Brandy distiller, Daniel Bosman, is one of the first referenced distillers written about in the Stellenbosch history books and his product would be sold illegally so as to incur no tax – as long as the bootleggers continued to work under the cover of night.

The old military tradition of Distillery road was that soldiers would place ceramic parrots on poles and use them as target practice and the Papegaaiberg (Parrot Mountain) became a means to stop any bullets from going astray. This weaves into gin distillation with the end of distillation apparatus being called a parrot.

Stealth, tradition and hard work ooze from every sip of Distillery Road, a blend of old and new, with lime and coriander on the nose and black pepper and ginger on the palate. Rounded off with Confetti bush and lemon pelargonium, this spicy gin takes you to a smooth finish of Angelica.
