The Hussar Grill Willowbridge Review

It’s time to celebrate!

The Hussar Grill has recently been awarded TripAdvisor’s Hall of Fame Award for its Green Point franchise. As we all know, TripAdvisor is one of the world’s largest travel sites, used by millions of people internationally, where you can find the best hotels and restaurants all over the world. The Hall of Fame Award celebrates hospitality excellence and honours restaurants that have won the award in the five years of its existence.

This award is based on customer reviews, making it a particularly meaningful endorsement. Our uncompromising commitment to quality is the cornerstones of our reputation. We look forward to another 50 years of award-winning excellence! – Justin, Chief Operating Officer.

To spread the word, we were lucky enough to be invited for dinner at one of their eight restaurants. As I live in the northern suburbs, Willowbridge was the obvious choice. We arrived straight after work, the restaurant still being fairly quiet. The manager mentioned that it usually fills up a little later in the evening and he was right as there was hardly an empty seat by the time our mains arrived.

As we were seated, we were presented with a tray of snacks that included thinly sliced sweet potato crisps, olives and a small bowl of biltong. The beef biltong is freshly made by Hussar Grill themselves and the quality of the meat it noticeable straight away. These are the finest cuts of wet-aged beef biltong you will ever taste. If you loved it as much as I did, you can buy a packet when you leave the restaurant.

I was feeling slightly depressed as I had just finished the bowl of biltong. But fear not, our waiter came to the rescue bringing our starters. An entire wheel of fried crumbed camembert (R74) was just what I needed. The inside was ripe and piquant so that the cheese wouldn’t ooze out and cover your entire plate once you started eating. It came with a wonderful cranberry jelly that Hussar Grill prepares on-site. We also enjoyed an Italian tomato soup (R38) which comes highly recommended. It has been a house speciality at Hussar Grill for the past thirty year. The soup had a rich aroma with a creamy consistency and nice balance of herbs to enhance the flavour. It was an excellent starter on a cold winter’s evening.

So far, my entire experience was very impressive. The service was excellent, the ambience very welcoming and the food spectacular. The TripAdvisor awards along with the many positive reviews on the platform are definitely justified. I couldn’t wait to see what the mains would bring.

We ordered two dishes from the Hussar Grill house specialities. A Madagascan Pepper Fillet (R182) which is served with a cream and green peppercorn reduction and the Blue Cheese Sirloin (R159), a classic New York cut sirloin topped with a creamy blue cheese sauce. If it were up to me all steaks should automatically come with this sauce. The flavour of the blue cheese wasn’t overpowering which can often be the case. This allowed the flavour of the wet-aged meat to come through nicely. The pepper sauce that accompanied the fillet was incredibly creamy and had quite a kick to it. If you like some spice with your meat, the Madagascan Pepper Fillet comes highly recommended.
