Spices & Spandex

Pretty often “friends” from far and wide ask if we can do them a favour and promote something of theirs. Some arb jam, a new type of cookie cutter, a sandwich of some sort. And we have to politely decline. It’s not often that something truly blows my mind. And that is exactly what a friend of mine from varsity has done.

Tom Perkins went on a 20,000km journey over 501 days, as he cycled from the UK to Cape Town. Along the way he wrote, he photographed, he cooked, ate and learnt. And now he is doing a kickstarter to make his dream come true.

SPICES & SPANDEX is a unique travel cookbook, inspired by this epic culinary journey. It documents the recipes, cultures, characters and challenges encountered along the road as Tom and his friend Matt, travelled through 26 countries on their own.

The book has 65 recipes drawn from and inspired by the six distinctive culinary regions they travelled: Western Europe, Central Europe and the Balkans, Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa, The Horn and Eastern Africa, and Southern Africa.

Part travelogue, part recipe book; SPICES & SPANDEX tells the story of… surviving on their limited wits, their friendship, a healthy amount of good-fortune and the unrelenting generosity of countless strangers.
