Simonsig Vintage Wine Day 2017

An opportunity to taste history as Simonsig opens its doors for its 6th annual Vintage Day Celebrations.

The annual Simonsig Vintage Day has become one of the most-anticipated events on the Winelands calendar. Offering not only family-friendly entertainment on the beautiful Simonsig wine estate, but also giving true wine connoisseurs the unique opportunity of sampling a range of historic Simonsig vintages, some dating back to the 90s.

On Saturday the 25th of August this year, Simonsig wine estate in Stellenbosch will once again open its doors to host its annual Vintage Day. The day will offer wine tastings, including the aforementioned range of rare vintage wines, as well as a wine masterclass with cellarmaster Johan Malan.

As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Chenin blanc harvest at Simonsig, it is fitting that this grape is the star of this year’s masterclass tasting. Simonsig is well-known for its world-class Chenin blanc wines, with the Simonsig Chenin blanc 2017 awarded best white wine in the South African category at last year’s Mundus Vini Wine Competition held in Germany, and the wines on offer are sure to reflect this quality. Numbers for the masterclass are limited to 40 seats, so make your booking early.

Simonsig is celebrating 50 years of bottling Simonsig Chenin blanc. Steen was where it all began for Simonsig in 1968, when the first Simonsig label was applied to a bottle of our own wine. Chenin blanc is still South Africa’s signature white wine and this masterclass will explore different styles of Chenin, along with some wines from great Loire winegrowers. Johan Malan, cellarmaster.

The Vintage Day celebrations cater not only to wine enthusiasts, but offer a relaxed and enjoyable day out in the vineyards for the whole family. There will be live music on the day, entertainment and a safe play area for kids, as well as food on offer from the estate’s Cuvèe restaurant.

Tickets for the general tasting and family day cost R165 per person, and include a glass and all wine tastings with the gates opening at 12h00. Wine club members get a 20% discount, and children under 18, accompanied by an adult, may enter for free. Tickets are available through webtickets.co.za, the Simonsig Tasting Room, or at the estate on the day.

The Chenin masterclass with cellarmaster Johan Malan will be held from 10:30 to 13:00 and attendance costs R250 per person – please book in advance as space is limited. This exclusive and intimate masterclass will allow you to taste older vintages from the Simonsig cellars, as well as Chenin blanc from the great Loire valley – truly a rare opportunity for wine connoisseurs.
