Simonsig scoops first Roussanne to be awarded Platter 5 Stars

The Malan family of Simonsig Estate, recognised for their innovative spirit, have set a new benchmark for the South African wine industry with the first ever 5-Star rating for a Roussanne from Platter’s South African Wine Guide.

Crafted exclusively for the 2013 Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction by Simonsig Cellarmaster Johan Malan, the CWG The Russety One 2012, was the first Roussanne to go under the hammer at the auction and is one of 80 Platter 5-Star wines listed in the 2014 edition of South Africa’s definitive wine guide.

In addition to the 5-star rating for the Roussanne, six Simonsig wines received 4 ½ stars and five were awarded 4 stars. The Platter 4 ½ star wines are Tiara 2010, Redhill Pinotage 2010, Merindol Syrah 2011, Cape Winemakers Guild Hairloom Shiraz 2011, Cuvée Royale 2008 and the Woolworths Limited Release Pinot Noir Brut Rosé 2012.

“Ever since I tasted a seven year old Rhone style white wine in California, I was intrigued by the refined mineral character of Roussanne and its special ability to mature. I just itched to try my hand at it! It is the most exciting new white variety I’ve worked with in years and to receive a Platter 5-star rating for this wine is the cherry on top,” says Simonsig cellarmaster, Johan Malan.

Originally grown in the Rhône wine region in France, Roussanne is subtle and restrained in its youth, but has a great reputation for its ability to age well. Johan named The Russety One after the russet colour of the ripe Roussanne berries.

The Russety One 2012 displays fragrant citrus blossom and lemongrass aromas, given even more impact by a zesty limestone minerality. The palate is full bodied with a silky, viscous texture and a bright natural acidity, whilst delicious floral and apricot flavours with hints of honey will linger on the palate endlessly.

The comprehensive, annual Platter’s South African Wine guide informs its readers to some of SA’s top wines and who’s who in the winelands, in an informative and entertaining format.
