Lunch Buffet at The Cullinan Hotel

Southern Sun The Cullinan have recently re-launched their lazy Sunday lunches with an amazing buffet selection inspired by their executive chef, Lindsay Venn. I was invited to enjoy the buffet with a friend a few weeks ago.  The Cullinan Sunday buffet takes place weekly from 12:30-14:30.  Price per head is R185 and half price for children under 12.

Entering the restaurant, you are greeted by the soothing sounds of the grand piano playing classical music setting the mood for an incredible lunch buffet. While being seated, I already had my eyes on the huge buffet tables – I was getting quite excited. The variety & amount of food available was just staggering. This was going to be fun!

To being, I had a selection of international cheeses with crackers & bread, while going back for a hearty & delicious chicken soup. My friend who was accompanying me on the day, tugged into the wide selection of salads that were available. A steady start, but we had big plans.

For our main meals, I had line-fish (yellowtail) as well as a mild beef curry with rice & vegetables. The curry could have used a little more oomph, but I still enjoyed it going back for seconds in a big way. My friend asked for the beef roast as well as lamb with spinach as a side dish while also having two portions of the curry. It was really that good!

Further mains included roast leg of lamb with mint jelly and lemon & herb spiced roast chicken. Some other hot dishes on offer are barbecued beef ribs, bobotie, Penang fish curry with cardamon-flavoured basmati rice and butternut and spinach cannelloni.

By the end, we were full & satisfied but I had to give the tiramisu a try which was an absolute delight. A wide variety of other desserts were also available – I wanted all of them: panacotta, crème brûlée, milk tart, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, lemon meringue, and seasonal fruit platters. There was something for everyone.

The Cullinan also caters for the kids delighting them with some of their favourite lunchtime treats like macaroni cheese and roast chicken pie.  And then there is their very own action station for decorating mini cupcakes, pancakes and waffles with ice-cream, cream, caramel or chocolate sauce, jelly tots, jelly babies and smarties.
