]]>The post Are you a Flexitarian? appeared first on Johannesburg Restaurants | FoodBlogJHB.
]]>With more and more people becoming flexitarians (those who choose to primarily follow a plant-based diet with occasional inclusion of animal products, often referred to as “casual vegetarianism”), The Good Life Show couldn’t be better timed.
The Good Life Show takes place in Cape Town (31st May – 2nd June 2024) and Johannesburg (26th – 28th July 2024) and hosts four dynamic events under one roof.
A recent ProVeg International study shows that, in South Africa, flexitarianism has grown by a 6% to 10% increase in the last year alone. This rise is mainly due to consumers becoming more aware of the health benefits associated with reducing their animal products consumption; awareness and concern around animal welfare generally; as well as current economic challenges which are influencing people to actively look for cheaper protein alternatives such as lentils, beans, and chickpeas. Meat-free meals are also often quicker and simpler to prepare, which offers obvious advantages during the current cost of living crisis. Some additional motivators to this lifestyle change are health, variety, price, and a desire to simply eat a more natural, unprocessed diet.
This coincides with more and more consumers choosing to live more ‘consciously’ and responsibly and this, in turn, affects consumers actively seeking household, hygiene and clothing items that are ethically sourced, cruelty-free, and environmentally sustainable.
Answering the call, The Good Life Show will give its visitors the information and the inspiration they need. Along with plant-based food and drink items available, there will also be also organic, ethical, and sustainable food and household products on show and on sale, and all the producers will be able to answer any questions about their products, their origins, and benefits. There will also be an area which will host dedicated educational talks with experts in the sustainable, agricultural and lifestyle sectors.
As more and more people become ‘flexitarians’ and ‘conscious consumers’, The Good Life Show is the perfect environment for them to expand their knowledge and gain valuable inspiration. As consumers become more aware and informed about how the food they eat, the state of their health and the state of the environment are all connected, The Good Life Show will not only help visitors plan their future food and lifestyle habits, but also help them make appropriate product and purchase decisions.

]]>We’re made of memories – what we’ve experienced, wept and laughed over, and the tools we’ve learned to make us functioning, accomplished members of our families and society.
So we’re all naturally keen to do everything in our power to make our brains and bodies, which house our memories, function optimally.
In fact, after just 8-10 weeks of eating mushrooms, there was an improvement in “balance, coordination, muscle strength, and learning and memory”. Now who wouldn’t want that?
Agaricus bisporus is the scientific name for your average white button mushroom, easily bought in most supermarkets. And white button, portabellini and big brown or portabello mushrooms are in fact the same mushroom, just at different stages of development.
Recipes to try today!
In a world with increasing rates of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, another 2022 US study published in Brain Sciences, and “conducted to bring attention to the importance of environmental factors in mitigating neurodegenerative diseases”, found that the “white button mushroom diet appeared to ameliorate the spatial memory deficits seen in transgenic AD [Alzheimer disease] mice as they increase in age.”
It would seem that adding mushrooms to your diet is a “no brainer” for the health of your mind and memories. Fortunately, they are really easy to incorporate, as they are not only readily available, they are a highly economical alternate to animal sources of protein in the diet.
When it comes to Blue Zone eating, mushrooms have been found to be a staple. The term Blue Zone, as defined by medical website Healthline, is “a non-scientific term given to geographic regions that are home to some of the world’s oldest people.”
Writing on the Blue Zone site, Robert Beelman, PhD, professor of food science at Pennsylvania State University, describes mushrooms as disease-fighting stars. “In the past, food scientists like me often praised mushrooms as healthy because of what they don’t contribute to the diet; they contain no cholesterol and gluten and are low in fat, sugars, sodium and calories,” he notes.
“But that was selling mushrooms short. They are very healthy foods and could have medicinal properties, because they are good sources of protein, B-vitamins, fibre, immune-enhancing sugars found in the cell walls called beta-glucans, and other bioactive compounds.
“Important nutrients in mushrooms include selenium, vitamin D, glutathione and ergothioneine. All are known to function as antioxidants that can mitigate oxidative stress and all are known to decline during ageing. Oxidative stress is considered the main culprit in causing the diseases of ageing such as cancer, heart disease and dementia.”
So there you have it folks, mushrooms may well be the path to better memory in later years and that not-so-elusive elixir of long life we all desire.

]]>The post The Rise and Resurgence of Batch Cocktails appeared first on Johannesburg Restaurants | FoodBlogJHB.
]]>Originally crafted with a combination of spirits, citrus, sugar, and spices, punch was a social drink that gained popularity in Europe and later in the American colonies.
This communal approach to serving drinks laid the groundwork for batched cocktail traditions.
In the mid-20th century, when cocktail parties became increasingly popular, hosts and hostesses resorted to batch cocktails as a way to spend more time with their guests. This era introduced pre-mixed cocktail recipes and the use of the pitcher for serving.
The late 20th century saw a resurgence of batched cocktails. The cocktail culture embraced convenience without sacrificing quality. Mixologists and home enthusiasts began experimenting with pre-batching to achieve consistency and efficiency in serving drinks, especially at events and busy bars.
Today, batch cocktails remain as a fun, and efficient way to serve delicious drinks, and ANGOSTURA® bitters a pivotable player in adding depth and complexity.
