A perfect Dark Storm with an Italian Twist by Sanpellegrino

A spicy twist on a Dark & Stormy, bringing the ginger flavours of the Sanpellegrino Italian Sparkling Drinks Ginger Beer to the forefront and using Jim Beam bourbon instead of rum.

The secret ingredient here is a cordial smashed together by Bartender Ryan Ontong of Fable in Cape Town.

I did an acid-adjusted ginger and aniseed cordial, by adding in local fynbos to pay tribute to the bar I work at. In my childhood, my favourite sweet flavour was liquorice and my favourite soft drink was ginger beer – so spice and liquorice. – he says.

On using the Sanpellegrino Ginger Beer as his mixer, Ryan says, “Ginger beer is one of my all-time favourite soft drinks, this one hits all the right notes. Spicy and a bit dry, which perfectly complements the overall drink.”  He also uses a liberal hand with the Angostura bitters, “The more bitters the better.’’

With all these notes of spice and aromatics, Ryan’s inventive cocktail goes down a storm regardless of the season.
