The Epic Blend – a Wine by Val de Vie

Mountain biking over 700 kilometers of scenic routes, in teams of two in the face of grueling natural elements, is a true test of tenacity and esprit de corps. The Absa Cape Epic is an eight-day adventure traversing through untamed areas of the Western Cape, starting on the majestic slopes of iconic Table Mountain and ending at Val de Vie Estate.

The final stage of the race is no easy feat, with 2000 meters of climbing over 70 kilometers, before riding into the refuge of the lush polo fields of Val de Vie Estate – The Valley of Life.

Val de Vie’s proud history of winemaking has been weaved into the legend of the World’s Premiere Mountain Bike Stage Race in a limited-edition wine, named The Epic Blend. This wine is made in a Cape Blend style consisting out of Shiraz and Pinotage varietals. It is a full-bodied red with spicy aromas of clove, aniseed and white pepper intensified by the rich, dark fruit flavours of black cherry and blueberry. Well integrated wood tannin leaves a pleasant clean, dry finish. Best served with comforting meaty casseroles, oxtail stews and slow cooked lamb dishes.

As host of the 2018 Absa Cape Epic Grand Finale, the estate offers spectators the opportunity to enjoy a taste of the Val de Vie lifestyle whilst eagerly awaiting the teams to cross the finish line. On Sunday 25 March 2018, Val de Vie Estate invite cycling enthusiasts and families to witness this momentous occasion.

Val de Vie is utopia for outdoor and sport enthusiasts, with a 42-km mountain biking route trailing through the estate. The first stage of the route has been completed and includes a variety of surfaces, suitable for beginner and advanced riders. The course outlay was planned around the input of experienced riders and trail runners and features bridges, drop offs and obstacles for the adventurous at heart. Some of the best and most striking mountain bike trails in South Africa are within a short ride from Val de Vie.

The Absa Cape Epic, the world’s premiere mountain bike race, takes place in the Western Cape from 18 – 25 March 2018.
