Cape Town Prawn Festival


The next big date to look forward to at Kenilworth Racecourse is the popular Cape Town Prawn Festival on Saturday 21 February. This family fun day coincides with a top class race meeting featuring the Grade 3 Breco Seafood Prix Du Cap and the Grade 3 Chairman’s Cup.

One lucky racegoer will win a grand prize of household appliances to the value of R20, 000. There will also be R50, 000 worth of other prizes given away during the day. Patrons will have to be on course to qualify for the prizes.

Breco Seafood is the new sponsor of the Prix Du Cap and will be giving away a fridge filled with seafood.

Everybody will be a winner on the day as prawns will be sold at an unbeatable R69 for a half kg and R109 for a kg. Peri-peri, lemon butter and garlic butter will be the choice of sauce and the prawns will be served with either rice or chips.


There will also be live entertainment on course, including the Cape Carnival and free kiddies entertainment.

Another big attraction will be the quality thoroughbreds competing on the race track, which is a sight for all ages to behold.

The Grade 3 Prix du Cap is a conditions race over 1400m for fillies and mares that traditionally attracts good fields. Winners over the last decade have included the Equus Champion Mother Russia and the Grade 1 winner Nania.

Among this year’s Prix du Cap nominations are the Grade 2 winners Maybe Yes, Hammie’s Hooker and Supreme Sunset as well as the Grade 1 placed horses Red Flame and Lanner Falcon and the exciting three-year-old Alexis.

The Grade 3 The Chairman’s Cup is a handicap over 3200m. The respective Equus Champion Stayers In Writing and Hot Ticket were both recent winners of this race.  In Writing went on to win the biggest staying race in the country, the Gold Cup. Major Bluff was another Gold Cup winner associated with the Chairman’s Cup, which he won twice last decade.

Among the nominations for this year’s Chairman’s Cup are the Grade 1 SA Oaks winner Ash Cloud and the Grade 3 Grandwest Cape Summer Stayers Handicap winner Coltrane.
