A Healthy Lunch at Marrow Broth

Have you heard of Marrow Broth on Loop Street?

Serving real, wholesome food where big importance is placed on free-range, grass-fed bone broth. When visiting Marrow, you will find a small and focused menu with five broth bowl dishes as well as a few salad options. It’s also not the biggest restaurant, but the space works with a few seats placed along the wall on either side. Guests will order at the counter before finding a spot to sit. It’s uncomplicated, quick and easy.

As a food trend, bone broth is making a huge come back all over the world as it has many health benefits that has made it popular again:

  1. Highly nutritious as it’s rich in calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.
  2. It may protect your joints and fight osteoarthritis
  3. Helps with digestion and gut health
  4. The amino acid glycine may help improve sleep.
  5. It may help you lose weight due to its high protein content.

While enjoying a delicious meal at Marrow, you can be sure that what you are eating is also good for your body & mind.

Bone Broth Tastings

We started our lunch with a bone broth tasting with the friendly manager talking us through each of the five different options.

  • Clear (pure bone broth)
  • White (vegetable broth with coconut, lemon grass & smoked miso)
  • Green (fish broth with seasonal greens, seaweed & dashi)
  • Brown (pure bone broth with gachugaru & red wine)
  • Yellow (pure bone broth with saffron & turmeric)

I love me a lemongrass and coconut curry, so when I saw the white broth, I knew it would become the clear winner. And it was. Classic Asian flavours done really well. And the best part? It’s also vegan-friendly!

Main Meal

For our actual main meal, we did however choose the yellow broth as the bowl meal sounded divine. Free range pork, ramen noodles, a soft poached egg with seasonal greens. Add the spiciness of the saffron & turmeric of the broth into the mix and you’ve got yourself another winner. Lunch for R95 sorted. 4 other broth bowl options are available between R80 and R90 per bowl.

We also enjoyed a teriyaki chicken salad that came with pineapple, baby tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, pickled cucumber as well as a bbq broth reduction as a dressing. A salad that’s fun to eat. The sweet & sour-y taste of the chicken along with the reduction was a match made in heaven. You’ve also got so many other flavours and textures to explore that will leave you with something a little different with every new bite.

Lastly, we also ordered two smoothies.

The white smoothie is made with coconut milk, mint, pineapple, with a choice of either the clear bone broth or veg bone broth. The green smoothie is made up of spinach, kale, banana, apple and again either the clear or veg bone broth. Both are availbale for R35.

All around, a great delight from the tasting to the meals as well as the smoothies. You will see me again very soon, Marrow!
